i thank You God
October 17th, 2007Today’s clear blue sky weather put me in mind of this poem (probably my favourite) from e. e. cummings, who wrote most everything in lower case back before it was cool — it’s called yes:
i thank You God for most this amazing
day: for the leaping greenly spirits of trees
and a blue true dream of sky; and for everything
which is natural which is infinite which is yes
(i who have died am alive again today,
and this is the sun’s birthday; this is the birth
day of life and of love and wings: and of the gay
great happening illimitably earth)
how should tasting touching hearing seeing
breathing any–lifted from the no
of all nothing–human merely being
doubt unimaginable You?
(now the ears of my ears awake and
now the eyes of my eyes are opened)
Pat Metheny
August 13th, 2007We got talking about Pat Metheny after dinner last night (who’da thunk it, at my house?) and so I was moved to finally upload some photos from The Way Up live tour in 2005. To whet your appetite, here he is on a 42-stringed thing he asked his luthier Linda Manzer to create, suitably called the Pikasso guitar.
The rest of the images are all here.
Granola
August 9th, 2007Once recipe I am regularly asked to share is for granola, a tasty American breakfast cereal. I’ve eaten some of this most days I’ve lived and I’m not bored of it yet
You can get the ingredients in any healthfood store for a good price or else pay a ridiculous price by shopping at Te$co or the like.
Harry Potter
June 17th, 2007Seeing as every time a new Harry Potter book comes out I spend the first 200 pages trying to remember what happened in the previous installment (just who is/was Sirius Black, anyway? And was I supposed to care?), I’ve decided to re-read them all in time for the final tome is released. The first six weigh in at a cool 2,800 pages, so to avoid reading all night on July 20th (and so’s not to get bogged down in the drudgery of Harry Whinger and the Order of the Phoenix) I’ll have to pace myself by reading 82 pages per day between then and now…
It’s been a while since I read the first one and — 99 pages in — already I’ve been struck by how well it is written and by the detail with which Rowling fleshed out the HP universe. Even Sirius Black gets mentioned on p. 16. Maybe Mr. Black was supposed to be more interesting than he ultimately was.
Oh so very under construction
January 29th, 2007Am finally getting around to turning this site into a blog. But it might take me a while…
